Perth Australia is worth the long flight Past Review

By (Environmental Science., Clark University) for

CIEE: Perth - Biology + Ecology Field Studies

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Very much worthwhile. I met fantastic people that I've kept in contact with, which was the most beneficial part of the entire experience.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload was much more reading and fewer assignments, but I found it relatively easy to keep up with. The main determining factor of the grade being the final exam was a little stressful, but if you prepared well it was alright.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The CIEE administration team at Murdoch was absolutely wonderful. They were extremely helpful when we first arrived and continued to be available whenever we needed them.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Location was great, but the kitchen was pretty bad. Considering we were supplying our own meals, that was slightly difficult. Loved my flatmates!

* Food:

The food was fine considering it was all done myself, but extremely expensive.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

All of the field trips planned by CIEE were fantastic-educational both in environmental/scientific and social ways. They were a great way to get acquainted with the area.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Health was fine overall except for the minor problem of 3rd degree burns on my legs on first arrival due to my own stupidity. The health services on campus were very helpful though.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? This program is particularly beneficial to environmental science students because it has a well established environmental and sustainability program (within the university and CIEE itself). My main advice would just be to be well prepared for just how much more expensive living in Australia is. If you're not planning on working during your time there, make sure you'll have enough.
