CIEE: Prague - Summer Psychology

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I had an amazing time and never wanted to come back! It opened my eyes to the world and fed my passion for travel and adventure. I never expected to love both locations I lived in as much as I did.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I only had an experience going to a local pharmacy to get cough medicine, it was somewhat difficult to communicate but I got by!

* Safety:

I felt very safe in all of my living conditions!

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? at least $150
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Try your best to buy food from the grocery store and make it at home - maybe try to make homemade cultural dishes from the area! Food from restaurants is much more expensive

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

In Prague I took an "Emergency Czech" course that taught me basic Czech words that I would need to use to help get around, but the language is so complex that it was hard to communicate fully.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? I took up to French 4 AP in high school and 2 semesters in college so I am almost fluent in French and did not have any issues using the language while in Paris
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Get to know locals! Often they want to practice their english as well, so you can both help each other out :)

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Living with local Czech students in Prague
  • Coming to Paris after a month in Prague and being able to understand so much French!
  • My program let us pick another location to take a weekend trip to in each session, I went to London and Barcelona!
* What could be improved?
  • The work load of course that I took in Prague was unfairly difficult and time consuming compared to other courses offered by the same program at the same time; I felt like I didn't have time to make the most out of my experience.
  • My program provided us with metro passes in Prague but not in Paris; it was a very unexpected expense when I arrived in Paris!
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? It is VERY helpful to practice the local language before departure, especially if it is a complicated language like Czech!
