By A student (women's and gender studies, Wellesley College) - abroad from 09/04/2014 to 12/22/2014 with
CIEE: Rabat - Language and Culture
I learned so much about Islam, feminism, colonization, and education in the Moroccan context. It was a great experience.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
I enjoyed all but one professor. Classes presented with me with information that I was unfamiliar with. Professors generally adjusted to student needs very well. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
One administrator was not very involved with us and left a month early for an outside internship, the volunteer program that they coordinated was unsuccessful. Another administrator was very difficult to get a straight answer out of for big and small issues. The third administrator was very involved, professional, and able to answer all my questions. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
It was located outside of Rabat. There was a carpool for the students who lived in Temara and we would get dropped off and picked up after school everyday. I felt like my independence was limited more than students who lived in the city and had easy access to public transportation. I felt that it was more difficult to leave the house and enter the neighborhood than it was to navigate the city. |
* Food: |
My host mother cooked for me. She adjusted to my dietary needs. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
The Darija semester course was cancelled. It would have been very useful in my feeling integrated with the local culture. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
I only had a light cold and did not need to access any healthcare systems. |
* Safety: |
Don't travel alone at night as woman. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
No
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | ~150 |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Budget for your lunches and weekend trips. |

* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

Reasons For Studying Abroad
To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you. |
The Avid AdventurerThe wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal. |
