What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes my study abroad experience was worth while. I had every opportunity I could have wanted at my disposal. The program was so well organized and in touch with the student's needs that I always felt guided. Travel is easy and there are always people who want to join. Spending money is not a problem. I was concerned about the amount of money I went with but studying abroad can be done on any budget so don't worry! I learned more about myself in my four months in Sevilla than I have in my entire college experience. I am much more independent and cultured. I feel that this is a once in a lifetime experiuence. Although I hope to return to Europe, I know that I will neevr again be able to expereience the city like I did while studying abroad (living with the family, making local friends, travel opportunities and discounts available to students etc.).

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The CIEE administration could not have been more eager to help the students. The enter staff was accessible and approachable. They helped me with housing problems, finding a doctor when I was sick, and even buying bus tickets when the language barrier posed a problem. They were a great resource and support system and really made my experience enjoyable.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in a homestay with an older woman (60 years old) and her 3 sons (35,30,28). I also had a roommate from Providence College.

My senora was aging and it became evident that keeping up wiht laundry, meals etc was difficult for her. However she was a lovely woman and the family was very warm and welcoming. The house was a little bit far from the University also.

* Food:

This is not a reflection of Spanish food, I am simply very particular about what I eat. The tapas are fun and always available! The toast with mantequill y mermalada is delicous!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The administration was very involved, and encouraged/helped us to meet locals.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I got sick and had to see a doctor at one point. My program staff was very attentive and helpful.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? internet is a necessity (to plan trips and coordinate with others) and is possible to rent. Also pay-as-you-go phones are available but expensive. You must put "saldo" on the phone and it runs up veryyy quickly...only text!

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

Improving your language skills is personal. I saw some students who refused to speak English or even gave it up for lent! Their improvement was far greater than others who only conversed with Americans.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? This program AND location are ideal for studying abroad. It is the perfect place to study because it is the largest city you will find in Spain while still being completely traditional and nearly untouched by the globalization of today. Their culture, traditions and pride are so strong it is comtagious! Absolutely recommend.
