The best 3 months of my life: travel, friend making & living in Italy Past Review

CIMBA: Paderno del Grappa - Undergraduate Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was incredibly worthwhile. I learned so much about myself and am much more confident in my abilities. I learned a lot about different cultures and how to act in them. I learned life skills in traveling, understanding different languages and trying new experiences. I wouldn't be who I am without my study abroad experience. Now that I'm home, not a day goes by I don't think about CIMBA and the incredible time I had there.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

These classes were very intense, in a small setting but taught by the best professors I've had during any of my time in college. You get close with people in your classes, which makes discussion and studying more fun.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

It's good, but gets very repetitive. You have pasta, bread, a meat and fruit for every lunch and dinner. Breakfast was cereal and pastries with coffee. You're at a boarding school, so it's what those students are given for meals.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Since there are so many American students there we mostly hung out with each other and didn't interact a whole lot with the people of the town. However, we would when we would go out to eat, drink or buy things at the store. More interaction with locals happened when we traveled during the travel breaks.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I had strep throat while I was there and was adequately taken care of. My friend broke her ankle and they helped her through the process as well.

* Safety:

Paderno del Grappa is a town of 2,000 and we go to a gated school. It's about as safe as you can get abroad.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

It depended on the week. Travel breaks you spent a ton of money because you're traveling for a week straight. But when you were on campus it was only if you wanted to buy a drink or food off campus so you saved a lot those weeks.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Travel time
  • The location
  • The other American students
* What could be improved?
  • The food
  • Updated dorms
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? The classes are intense, but there is help available. Save money now because you'll want the extra you have while you're over there. Have your parents come visit if they are able to - it was great to see them during the program and share with them my experiences.

Travel Writing

Course Department:
Instructor: Charlene Bunnell
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This course was fabulous! We had a very small group so we got a lot of great critique on our writing. We also had the chance to write about the great experiences we had gone through and make a magazine at the end of the semester. Those pieces of writing are something I hold very dear to remember my time abroad.

Journalism Ethics

Course Department:
Instructor: Dominic Standish
Instruction Language: English (British)
Comments: We learned a lot, but a lot of the material was over my head. I also felt that some of what we were learning was more geared toward what he had studied in the field and less related to Journalism Ethics and what I wanted to be learning about.

International Marketing

Course Department:
Instructor: Christopher Ancona
Instruction Language: English
Comments: I've studied a lot of marketing here, but he opened my eyes to the differences and similarities of it around the world. We worked on a group project that was very applicable to the real world. He incorporated graphs, movie clips, articles and Skype interviews into class time. It was a wonderful class.
