Extended vacation! May 27, 2024

By (Psychology, Wellesley College) - abroad from 01/29/2024 to 05/11/2024 with

College Consortium for International Studies (CCIS): Copenhagen - Danish Institute for Study Abroad

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I reflected a lot on my interactions with culture and the type of people I engage with. I also learned to be a lot more independent and self sufficient. This semester was a great way for me to grow as a person and reflect on the type of future I want for myself.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in outdoor LLC, in basecamp Lyngby. We lived in nice studio apartments, had a great community, a great commute on the S train, and it was a great way to learn independence.

* Food:

I spent my own money on groceries, but the stipend was very helpful and it was great to learn to cook on my own.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I didn't learn any Danish or have interactions with Danes in general. I learned some bits of culture through buying groceries and people watching.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

For the most part it was accessible. My mother fell and had to go to the ER, it wasn't handicap friendly, but not the worst. I was very ill once and called the help line for assistance but no one picked up or helped me so I personally have not used the health care.

* Safety:

Very very safe

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

I would chose a program that was 1. in a warmer location so that I can walk around/sight see more often 2. A more academically rigorous program such as one affiliated with a university 3. less expensive... literally most other places

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Denmark is definitely very expensive. Something that wasn't discussed was that the culture of DIS is for students to travel often around Europe, and on their own dime. You don't have to, but everyone does and it costs a lot. You will not be able to get a job while you're there, so make sure you save up at least $1000 usd for light traveling. I personally rarely went out to eat because it's around $25-$40/meal, and I enjoyed cooking. Being a tourist in Copenhagen is expensive, do beware.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $200
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Before the start of the semester, I gave myself a total budget for the semester. Then, I rationed it up for three categories each month: groceries, going out for food, and activities/shopping. This allowed me to stay within budget but also splurge with leftover budget when I had it. I highly recommend this technique, with $50 for groceries (after accounting for food stipend), $100 for going out for food and drinks, and $100 for sight seeing/activities/shopping.

How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? None
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? I am fluent in many languages, but not Danish.
