Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

All the professors at The International College of Seville are very qualified and quite passionate about what they teach. All lectures are engaging and the workload is just right. Some classes even include fieldtrips to Seville's most famous sites.!

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The staff at The ICS goes above and beyond in assuring that each student has the best experience possible. They really take care of everything from making sure your home stay is the best it can be, to organizing amazing trips throughout Spain and even to Morocco.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My home stay could not have been better. My house mom cooked 3 meals every day for my roommate and I, cleaned our room and bathroom once a week, washed and ironed all our clothing every week, and even packed us small lunches for when we would not be home for lunch. I felt and still feel like I am part of their family.

* Food:

The food my house mom cooked for us was delicious and healthy. I ate paella, Spanish tortillas, Spanish stews, amazing seafood, and so much more. Nothing beats authentic Spanish cuisine.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

From the moment I arrived, I felt like I was part of Seville. The locals were eager to meet me and made me feel right at home from the first day. I improved my Spanish, learned the city's special phrases, spent my birthday and thanksgiving completely immersed in Seville's nightlife, and even began to feel like the way of life in Seville was more compatible with me than the "American" way of life.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Students at The ICS are given the best insurance that covers just about anything that could happen while you're there. If you're traveling over a long weekend, the staff stays in contact with you to make sure you are safe. The staff really cares about all the students and because of that, I never felt worried about my health or safety at any point.

* Safety:

Seville is incredibly safe. I truly feel safer in Spain than I do in the United States. The ICS is located in the upscale neighborhood of Porvenir. I never at any point felt unsafe in Seville.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

The three months I spent in Seville were the best of my life and I am actually going back in September to participate in the same program!

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

The lifestyle in Seville does not require spending lots of money. After I paid my tuition, my only expenses were going out at night and extra traveling. Long story short, I did everything I wanted to over 3 months in Seville and still only went through about 80 euros a week.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? About $85
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Don't spend your money on things. Spend it on experiences. Studying abroad is all about the experiences and not about the souvenirs.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

In Seville, one speaks Spanish. Each student is required to take at least one Spanish language course which helps everyone improve their language skills. It was fun to improve speaking Spanish as an entire group.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Advanced
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Fluent
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? A 400 level college Spanish course.
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Speak it as much as you can. Don't be scared of messing up! That's part of the learning experience. Also, listening to Spanish music helps you to understand it better.

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Comparative Grammar

Course Department: Spanish Language
Instructor: Ignacio Martinez
Instruction Language: Spanish
Comments: This was far and away the best Spanish course I have ever taken in my 8 years of studying the language. Ignacio is a fantastic teacher who knows just about everything there is to know about the translation of Spanish to English and the other way around. Each class I learned something new about Spanish grammar and even learned about Spanish culture along the way. Ignacio is the academic director and The ICS and upon your arrival to the college, he personally helps you select your courses for the semester. I highly recommend this course to anyone who is looking to get a stronger grasp on how Spanish works.
