CYA (College Year in Athens) - Semester/Academic Year Program

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I have such a clear sense of direction from attending this program, and am so incredibly glad that I had decided to take part in it! A field school of this kind is the only way for students to know if field archaeology is the field for them, and I was lucky enough to find that the field fit me perfectly!

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Lunch, which is the largest and most substantial meal of the day in Greece, was paid for by the program, but both breakfast and dinner were not. Additionally, we had to purchase water on our own several times per week, as drinking tap water was not encouraged on the islands. On average, students probably spent about $50-100 per week, which is manageable but certainly something that must be kept in mind.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $75
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Try to only eat out once or twice a week! You will save so much money using the grocery stores (and buying Greek brands) to buy yourself food for breakfast and dinner. However, if you are comfortable eating out every night to have the full experience of Greece, it is not too expensive and meal portions were large enough to pack away and eat again another day!

* What could be improved?
  • Offering more food
  • More exploration
  • More activities
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish that I had known how much money I would be spending out of pocket, as I would have brought more euros to pay for rather than using my card for everything. Transfer fees for paying through card and withdrawing at ATMs are expensive, and a lot of money had gone to just fees.

The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
