About
This experimental hands on study abroad course was created to address a world wide rising issue of drinking water safety as well as exploring the unique cultural history and society of Egypt, a past and present cultural center in Africa.
Availability and safety of fresh water for human beings and other living creatures are threatened by the rise and disposal of toxic industrial and nuclear waste across the universe. In developed and underdeveloped countries, this problem is on the rise affecting mostly children and those on the low socio-economic levels.
The history of Egypt has always been long, rich, and colorful for the last seven thousand years due to the flow of the Nile River, with its fertile banks and delta, the country native inhabitants and the outside influence of conquerors, settlers and foreign travelers. Much of Egypt's ancient history is still a mystery to the world.
Students will travel across Egypt visiting and collecting fresh water samples from the same source, the Nile, but from different sites. The group will visit Alexandria, Egypt’s capital under the Ptolemic Greek rule, Cairo, Egypt capital for many centuries, as well as Luxor, Egypt capital under the pharaohs and other red sea world
famous resorts.
This trip, led by Dr. Seleem, a native of Egypt, will enable students to interact with locals and students, visit universities, address and analyze the rising problem of the Nile River pollution, the only source of fresh water for the whole country as well as enjoying the unique historical sites, sea resorts and an unparalleled civilization.
