About

Dar Si Hmad is a non-profit organization based in Agadir, Morocco, working with local communities on numerous cultural, educational, and environmental projects. Among other things, the organization facilitates access to clean water in the most untouched rural villages of southern Morocco, educates rural children about water and sustainable development, supports women-led argan and cacti cooperatives, and empowers youth to participate in the development of their communities. Most importantly for readers at Study Abroad 101, Dar Si Hmad invites international researchers and students to be a part of their inspiring work by facilitating academic and cultural programs, service learning, homestays, and language classes in Modern Standard Arabic, Darija, Tashelheet, and Hassaniya. This not only offers students a unique opportunity to engage with local populations and participate in locally-driven development initiatives, but also creates a platform for innovative dialogue and international research on an underrepresented region of Morocco.

For a long time, the cultural status of Morocco's southern region suffered from disenfranchisement vis-à-vis capital cities and centers of power in Morocco, were students more commonly study abroad and conduct research, but today the region is arising from the ashes and is standing on its feet again; re-appropriating its rich and diverse heritage, making thus a valued field for our students to explore and experience.
