Dilit International House: Rome - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes, it was worthwhile. I learned about the art and history of Rome while also being able to get around the city with the language.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I thought that it was challenging in class. They always kept us thinking. However, there are no grades, so it's kind of hard to know how one is doing in the class. Also, we did not focus on the grammar enough to really understand how the language worked. We did a lot of "guessing" activities, in which we literally guessed the rules of the language, and afterwards, they were not explained to us very properly.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

They are not always polite in the office, but they do help you out when needed.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The apartment was not always clean. There were times when the trash was almost overflowing, and I didn't even know where to dump it until 2 weeks into my study.

* Food:

I was in Italy. Enough said.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I did not actually participate in any activities by the program.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

One just has to be smart in Rome: be aware of your surroundings.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? N/A

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

I practiced the language outside of class quite often. I had two Italian roommates, and I also used it when I could going to the tourist sites. However, I thought I would be able to speak more by the end of the month.
