Copenhagen gave me a sense of independence that I would never have found by staying in the US. Past Review

DIS Copenhagen: Semester
Yes, very much worthwhile. Studying abroad hasn't changed any of my future plans, but it has increased my learning in public health and health care as a whole. I am much more culturally aware in terms of understanding the way people live and learn.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
It felt like the professors really wanted students to succeed. The grading was hard for foreign professors since as Americans we are used to getting As but Danish students don't really receive As, I think that was difficult for professors. There was much more daily reading than I have a PC. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
Most of the administrators were former DIS students therefore they were able to relate to what we were going through and help us accordingly. I never had any issues that required help from administrative services thus I cannot really comment on the strengths/weaknesses. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I lived in a kollegium with my own room and full bathroom. I shared a kitchen with 25 other non-American students. |
* Food: |
I cooked for myself. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
I pretended to be a viking for a day. It enabled me to get into character and understand the history of Scandinavia in a fun way. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
I felt very safe in Copenhagen. The universal health care system is very much different from the US health care system, but I never came into contact with it for personal use, just for classroom related activities through my public health major. No vaccines were needed for the program, and the program advocated very much for safe sex to stop the spread of sexually transmitted infections, they kept a bowl of condoms at the front desk for student use. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | It is important to budget the food stipend given to students. I found it helpful to make a grocery list before going to the store to help control spending. |

A Look Back
* What did you like most about the program? |
|
* What could be improved? |
|
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | All students would benefit from this program. The abundance of Americans and classes in english help prevent too much culture shock. The Danish people are very friendly, the only advice I would give to someone is don't be discouraged by the weather. The winter is very dark and cold so students just need to find ways to get around feeling unmotivated to go outside. |

Comments: | Torben way my favorite professor abroad. He is so knowledgable about everything he teaches and can relate to students very well. I retained so much information just by listening to his lectures because he kept them exciting and filled with relevant information. I would recommend this class to anyone interested in history. |
