DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
The other kids in the program made my experience fun and exciting because my housing made it somewhat difficult to integrate with Danes

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The work load was much easier than what I am used to at Middlebury. As far as study abroad programs go, DIS puts a much greater focus on academics between the variety of course options and the study tours. The grading was pretty similar to in the US and was based on a mix of participation in class, projects, papers, and tests. However, some of the grading standards were a little unclear.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

DIS organizes all sorts of programs and activities for the students to participate in throughout the semester including weekend trips, week-long adventure trips during the break, and nightly events.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

The food is expensive.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The organized trips are awesome.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Out of all the cities in Europe I visited, I felt the safest in Copenhagen by far.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

It is really difficult to use Danish in conversation when all of the Danes speak fluent English but it is very helpful for grocery shopping, reading signs, etc..

Comments: This was my favorite course, partly because it was taught by a phenomenal visiting professor from Villanova. She did a great job of engaging the class and everyone in the class was intrinsically motivated to do well and work hard.
