Denmark: A less-explored (but equally amazing) option for studying abroad Past Review

Yes. It was great to take a break from the immense pressures of college life, while still learning and growing as a person.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The overall educational experience was great. The style was the perfect blend of European and American, so it was refreshing but not too new that it was impossible to get used to. The workload was appropriate for study abroad and I really enjoyed the experiential learning components (study tours, field studies, etc.). |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
They were very supportive and knowledgeable about pretty much every problem you could encounter, which made the transition very easy. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
My host family provided everything that I needed and were quick to offer help or suggestions when I needed it. However, they treated me more of as a live-in guest than a member of their family, which was a little bit disappointing for me. Most people had very positive experiences, though, and I would say that mine was not a poor experience at all, just not ideal. |
* Food: |
The food was very good, although there was not a lot of variation from week to week. It also wasn't extremely balanced, although I think that's just a Scandinavian thing. I'm not a picky eater and I don't have any dietary restrictions, so this was not really an issue for me. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
I recommend getting out and exploring Copenhagen. It's an amazing city with a lot to offer!! |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
Copenhagen is a very safe city, so as long as you're careful, safety really isn't an issue. I didn't have to use the health care system, but the fact that health insurance was provided to us was definitely a plus. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | 100 DKK, but only because I usually ate out at least once a week. Living with a host family meant that I didn't have to spend money unless I wanted to purchase something extra for myself. |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Things in Copenhagen are really expensive!! Be prepared to pay a lot for things that you can buy very cheaply in the States. |
Language
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | None |
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition? |
