DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
From an environmental studies major, I learned an incredible amount living in one of the greenest cities in the world for just a semester. Not only in classes, but even in daily life. It was very worthwhile to live like a Dane because they really know what they are doing to protect the environment in Denmark!

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

It was more academically rigorous than other study abroad programs, but the knowledge I gained from it was worth it.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $100
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Copenhagen is very expensive. What one would consider an average cup of coffee in the US is $5-$8 in Denmark. Typical lunches usually are usually $10-20 dollars. Be careful from the start and save that money for the end of your semester when you will get more busy and have less time to cook for yourself.

Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Talk to your Danish friends/family in Danish and order meals in Danish.

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? There is a lot more culture in Denmark than one would expect from the food to the people to the lifestyle. Immerse yourself in it as much as possible because the Danes are very relaxed and caring. Their perspective on life is one that everyone should experience. It's nice now having a low-stress mentality after studying in Denmark for a semester.
