Hygge, Smørrebrød, and New Nordic: Diving headfirst into Danish Cultre Past Review
By A student (Neuroscience, Middlebury College) - abroad from 08/18/2014 to 12/12/2014 with
DIS Copenhagen: Semester
Studying abroad gave me the opportunity to put into practice many skills I have learned in high school and college - making conscious decision, pushing myself out of my comfort zone, proactivity, work-life balance, etc. It was ABSOLUTELY worthwhile!
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 1 month - 6 months |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Although not academically challenging in the same way as Middlebury, DIS provided a unique opportunity to apply learning in diverse, novel, and international contexts that are simply not available at Middlebury. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
|
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I lived in a home stay, which I was initially tentative about, but it was ultimately one of the most amazing aspects of the program. My family was fantastic and my appreciation and understanding of the Danish culture was constantly and positively driven by their generosity and desire to incorporate me into their lives. |
* Food: |
|
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Living in a home stay provided the ideal opportunity to interact with Danes on an incredibly personal level. In addition, due to my personal effort to meet local Danes, I formed several close friendships with Danes living in my town, which greatly enhanced my experience of the Danish culture. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
Once you received your CPR number to access the healthcare system, care was easily to access and served me well. Healthcare prior to receiving the CPR number was sufficiently acceptable, but covered by DIS' insurance, which, four months after my visit, has not yet processed my refund. |
* Safety: |
Be aware of differences between American culture and the culture of your country of study. Cultural misunderstandings and what defines culturally appropriate behavior can serve as a significant source of safety issues. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | It varied week to week, but at least $200 |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Don't buy coffee in the center of the city! Also, eating out is especially expensive and Danes do it only on special occasions - something you should try to emulate |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
I loved learning Danish and took a lot of my own initiative to facilitate my own learning of it and practice it as frequently as possible |
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | None |
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Beginner |
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? | Nothing in Danish |
How many hours per day did you use the language? | |
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? | Meet local Danes, or stay with a host family! You won't practice your Danish at all if you live in one of the dorms with all American students, which might seem easier but is really a huge missed opportunity |

A Look Back
* What did you like most about the program? |
|
* What could be improved? |
|
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | Housing plays a huge role in your experience - while all housing options have pros and cons, certain living arrangements demand more mental preparation, more active cultural exposure, and arguably, more cultural-intensive experiences. |
Reasons For Studying Abroad
To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you. |
The Nearly Native or Trail BlazerCraving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.' |
