DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I wrote something really heartfelt and the website lost it, but I believe I ended my semester with a great sense of self that I did not have before hand and I came away with a great deal of heart, understanding, strength, and ability for self reliance

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Dorm, loved my living arrangements, I was in the Signalhuset Kolligeum, where I was about a 10 minute walk from the metro which goes into Nørreport the station closest to DIS and the Regional train station which can take you to the central station, Nørreport, the airport and many other places, I had a single room in an apartment with three other people, we shared a kitchen, living space and two bathrooms

* Food:

Fruit and Veg are not as expensive as in the states, because the farming communities in Denmark and close to the city. Though I do not eat pork and that is a huge meal staple in Denmark so I had trouble sometimes

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I didn't have any experience on my own, though my good friend had a lot of difficulty because it took them over a month and a half to diagnose a severe chest infection and it was only when they were coughing up what can be assumed was blood did they get the scans they needed and even then they were prescribed medication that their allergies prevented them from taking

* Safety:

It felt pretty safe for the most part, I would walk home in the middle of the night from the train station and only had two experiences of harassment in that environment. Though I feel as if those were outliers because the individuals were not Danish

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

We were given a food stipend from our tuition that helped but did not last the entire semester, I also had many days of classes where I was there for eight hours straight without much breaks so instead of packing a lunch before the day I picked something up between classes and that added up

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I did not keep track but,I probably spent about 500kkr each week
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? But the 7kg bag of pasta your first week, you will probably go through a lot of pasta, it's easy and quick and you can do so much with it, save in the long run, go to Bilka (equivalent of target or Walmart in Denmark) and buy things in bulk that first few weeks

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

Once I learned to prefer in Danish, I would and it was appreciated but not required, same with pleasantries on the street

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? Danish N/A
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Everyone used DuoLingo

  • Encouragement to explore Denmark and Europe
  • The classroom environment
* What could be improved?
  • Explanations regarding transportation
  • Collaboration with KU students
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? A couple things, it's an old city the street signs are sometimes non existent and the street names change in the middle of the street, also I learned right before I left that most credit cards aren't accepted anywhere most places only take cards with a chip that are debit cards or cash, so make sure your debit card does not have exorbitant rate and if it does look at some options that don't require international fees

Course Department: Business
Instructor: Rikke and Line
Instruction Language: English
Comments: The course was challenging though enjoyable, the one I was in was offered Tuesday and Friday mornings, we did a lot of group work and our grades were very dependent on the group work and it was more so challenging because sometimes my group members wouldn't show up to class on the early Friday mornings because they were traveling, we did not get to choose our groups and worked with the same people all semester. The whole semester we worked up to our final project of creating an ad campaign for Läkerol Dentafresh and it was very insightful to the road ahead for those becoming advertisers.

Danish Language and Culture

Course Department: Danish
Instructor: Suzanne
Instruction Language: English/Danish
Comments: it was challenging, nightly homework, enjoyed the field trips with the class, learned quite a bit, but the professor quite often made comments that left a bad taste in my mouth, she is the head of the department and I felt as if I couldn't speak to anyone regarding her comments because of this

LGBTQ in Europe (core course)

Course Department: Gender and Sexuality
Instructor: Sara G.
Instruction Language: English
Comments: LOVED THIS COURSE! It was quite challenging, but also rewarding as the same time, the class was small and group work was done most days, there was a debate that was graded as well as a large final paper with drafts due early on, a large portion of your grade has to do with participation.

Masculinities in Scandinavia

Course Department: Gender and Sexuality Studies
Instructor: Ane
Instruction Language: English
Comments: Course was not challenging, though semi-well prepared she was not really knowledgeable in the field which hindered some activities and discussions in my opinion, most of your grade is reliant on class participation, she also has a small group project and a 2 short papers for her class

Barcelona: Race, Ethnicity, and Gender

Course Department: Gender and Sexuality
Instructor: Ane Larsen
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This was a DIScovery tour course so it counts as one credit and you take a trip with the class during the spring break. The class left much to be desired and I felt like I did not learn to much coming from it, half was class participation and half was a final paper for your grade in the class
Credit Transfer Issues: BRANDEIS DOES NOT ACCEPT THIS COURSE. You will not get credit it for it, though I went in knowing this and took the course so that I could go to Barcelona on a guided trip with a group, and for that it was well worth it
