What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? 400 level German
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? I did another semester abroad in Germany and found I progressed a lot more in my German because I had previous experience before leaving. My Danish, while it improved a lot, didn't improve as much as I would have liked because I was learning it all from scratch. If your goal is to improve language skills by going abroad, try taking some classes before going if possible. It helps a lot.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • innovative classes
  • wonderful city
  • scandanavian culture
* What could be improved?
  • much longer commute than all my peers (1 and 1 half hours)
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? DIS told me my commute would be about half an hour shorter than it ended up being. Pay attention when you chose your housing option because you can end up surprised and far far out of Copenahgen and deep in the Danish countryside. This did not happen to the majority of my peers but if you think this would be a problem for you to be so far, specify on your housing form, spell it out so it does not happen to you.That being said, the people I met in my small town were some of the nicest people and I learned more about Danish culture being there than I would have in a student dorm 5 minutes walking distance from my classes. There are lots of housing options at DIS so make sure to pick the best one for you.
