DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned so much about myself. It was more than worthwhile.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The academic courses that I took through DIS were rigorous and challenging mostly because of the different style of teaching and grading. Most of my courses had only a small number of assignments - one or two graded assignments - and this differed from my home university courses. This difference made the courses more challenging because grades relied on the outcome of those assignments. I used less resources outside of the classroom than I have done in the past; however, I did do more hands on work with my courses at DIS.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I was neither satisfied nor dissatisfied.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in a homestay and I had the best host parents I ever could've asked for.

* Food:

My host family provided me with wonderful meals and introduced me to Danish cuisine.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I engaged with my host family's friends and family. I was part of a Buddy Network, but I did not feel connected with those within my group. My Homestay Network was also unsuccessful - we only had one event and that was not very helpful in introducing me to families who lived nearby.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I did not have any direct experience using the healthcare system, but I did feel it was accessible and I had the resources I needed.

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Because of my home stay, I did not have a lot of extra expenses, but in order to make the best of my experience, I wanted to travel more and that added to my expenses.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? --
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Living with a host family allowed me to spend my money on traveling instead.
