DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned a lot about myself as well the rest of the world and how different it is than America. It was very worthwhile. I realized that I am able to do things on my own and that I am an independent person. I learned many life skills that I took with me home. I also learned a lot in my classes.

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I wish the program checked in on their host families more often because one time is not enough...a lot can change in 10 years of being a host family.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

It was very easily accessible during the summer. With my insurance card I was able to go to the doctors when I needed. They were very helpful.

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I spent about $150 a week on food and personal expenses per week and it would be very easy to spend a lot more if I did not budget my spendings before I went abroad. Know how much you have to spend before you go abroad.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? about $150/week not including plane tickets
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? It would be very easy to spend a lot more if I did not budget my spendings before I went abroad. Know how much you have to spend before you go abroad.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Intermediate
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? nothing
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Take a language course. It is so helpful when trying to immerse within the culture. Even if you don't speak it often, it is a reassuring feeling knowing that you can speak it when you need to and the members of the community will be happy that you attempt to speak it. Keep in mind that most people know English.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
