A Whirlwind of Learning and Excitment Past Review

By (Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology, Scripps College) - abroad from 08/15/2015 to 12/12/2015 with

DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Definitely worthwhile. Because I had to commute to school, I had a lot of time to just sit and think and I learned a lot about myself and what I enjoy and want out of life.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Everyone was more than willing to help with any problems that I had. If anything went wrong, they were there to walk me through the problem and the steps I needed to take.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

DIS did a FANTASTIC job pairing me with my host family. I don't know how they do it, but I was not disappointed with anything about my living situation.

* Food:

The food cooked by my host family was amazing. When I did eat out, I was able to find almost any type of food I was craving for. The only reason why this is not a 5/5 is because the food in Copenhagen is a bit pricey.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Because I was in a home stay, my host family would explain things to me if I had any questions about how things were done in Denmark or their opinions on certain things I was learning in my Danish class.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Super accessible. The nurse spoke English with me on the phone and I was able to be seen that day. I know people who did have difficulty seeing a doctor because they had a common cold. From what I have heard, if it is something urgent, they can see you that day, if not, they will try and set an appointment about a week later.

* Safety:

Even though the streets were dark where I lived, I never felt unsafe going home at night.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I loved DIS and the people that I met. I fell in love with Copenhagen, the cold, the fashion, the people.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Copenhagen as a city is very expensive so budgeting is key.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 75
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Find cheap cafes. Brew your own coffee. Cook.
