Denmark as My Second Home Past Review
By A student (Health/Medical Preparatory Programs; Anthropology, Brandeis University) - abroad from 01/11/2019 to 05/12/2019 with
DIS Copenhagen: Semester
I gained another loving family (my host family) and the knowledge of another country that I could love to visit again. I know way more about Denmark than I would have if I went to another country. I have found another home and I cannot wait to go back.
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 2 weeks - 1 month |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
I think the difficulty of the courses and the amount of time they took outside of class was ideal as they were still engaging and rigorous but weren't too time-consuming where I had time to explore the city. Also, the field studies and study tours were great components to the courses as they allowed for further learning and cultural experiences. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
|
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
My host family was wonderful!!! |
* Food: |
Copenhagen is an expensive city but living with a host family cut down on food expenses. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
I lived with a host family so I felt very integrated into the local culture; especially during parties and holiday events at the house. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
|
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
Yes, I would! I learned so much (Culturally and Academically). When I look back on my semester, I have done so much and gone to a few other countries and I cannot believe it went by so quickly. |
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | $5-$30 |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | If you have the urge to buy something that you have the money for now but do not exactly need it, then set that money aside for abroad. |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
There are Danish classes offered (Beginner to Advanced) but the program does not require the students to take Danish. I took a Beginner Danish class as it was required by my university and I really enjoyed it. |

How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Beginner |
