Great people, Great place, Mediocre school Past Review
By Clemi U (Middlebury College) - abroad from 01/14/2019 to 05/10/2019 with
DIS Copenhagen: Semester
I met lifelong friends, I lived in a new place, I took classes that I otherwise would not have taken, so for me it was worth it.
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 6 months+ |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Most of the classes were very well taught and engaging but there were a few that were incredibly problematic because the teaching was badly done. The ability to go on field trips and travel was also incredibly educational and a huge benefit to the program. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
handled most problems well. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
no complaints |
* Food: |
the stipend should be expanded to be able to last the whole semester |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Did not meet many, if any Danes, was incredibly isolating and only met other Americans. This program should pair up with ERASMUS to meet other EU students, or at least have most classes integrated with the local universities. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
either was very helpful or very unhelpful depending on whether the student was an EU citizen or not. Only helped Americans. |
* Safety: |
was a safe place 24/7 |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
Apart from certain problems with the educational components, the experience was very nice |
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
1.5, had to supplement the food stipend and the overall cost of living was very high |
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | $150 |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Find out how much the stipend is and be aware of how much you spend each week to manage it. |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
|

How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Beginner |

Instructor: | Jesper Andreasen |
Instruction Language: | English |
Comments: | Not a good teacher, had unreasonable expectations, and was inflexible even when it was his own failings that caused us to be behind schedule. At one point he asked us to teach ourselves 90 slides 2 days before an exam because he had not been able to get through it all and was unwilling to change the date of the midterm exam. He was also racist, at one point not realising that using the full N-word was incredibly offensive to most/all people in the class. |
