DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was 100% worthwhile. I learned the importance of putting myself out there to meet new people. I also learned how to become more independent and to live on my own.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I only have great things to say about DIS: Study Abroad in Scandinavia (Copenhagen). The program is incredibly well done and the staff and faculty are so supportive. It is a very immersive educational experience as each class had designated field trips each Wednesday to interact with the Danish community within that courses field of study. The rigor of the courses was also the appropriate amount which helped ensure that I was actively learning.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The administration of the program was incredible. Everything was incredibly organized and if there were any issues, they were immediately resolved. The administration and professors were also helpful with anything you may need.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I loved my living arrangement! I lived in the city centre in a large apartment and met some of my best friends through my housing. The apartment was beautiful and had plenty of space for the amount of people who lived in it.

* Food:

We cooked our own food, however the $600 food stipend covered almost the entirety of my grocery shopping for the semester.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Social and Cultural integration with young peers was a bit harder since we were unable to take classes with them. However, from a professional and educational experience, we had many field studies where we got to see the professional and educational culture of Denmark.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Health issues were easily addressed. I had not received my Danish health insurance card at the time but had to have a visit to the doctor. However, despite having my insurance card, DIS reimbursed me the cost of the visit.

* Safety:

I felt very safe in Copenhagen!

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I loved Copenhagen and the DIS program. The educational experience was awesome and immersive into the lcoal culture. Socially, I met some great friends and loved the city of Copenhagen.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Copenhagen is defiantly an expensive city. However, if you cook for yourself at your home then it is much more financially feasible.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $150 on food
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Try to cook for yourself as much as possible!

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

During our Danish course, as little english as possible was expected to be spoken.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? I had not completed a Danish language class prior to departure.
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Practice Danish with your friends / roomates!

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Structure of program -- built in travel with your class
  • Immersive educational aspect -- field studies with Danish professionals
  • Housing accommodations -- met some awesome people through my housing arrangement
* What could be improved?
  • I felt like the workload was not very evenly spread throughout the semester. The last 4 weeks of the semester, it felt as if the work was piled up and a bit overwhelming based on the amount of assignments that needed to be completed.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Put yourself out there and be open to meeting new people!!!
