DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned a lot about myself and tried things I never would have done in the U.S. I don't regret going at all!!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Professors are very involved and want to see you do well! Learning is very hands-on and they encourage a Danish perspective. Unlike any classes I've ever had before.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Absolutely loved Denmark! The pace is very slow, and people love to chat over coffee, swim in the summer, and ice skate during the winter. The cafes and bakeries are top-notch, and the views are beautiful. I look forward to visiting again!!

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in Stay Bryggen, which was the best DIS accommodation (in my opinion). I had 5 other suitemates, and we got along super well. There was a weekly cleaning service, a beautiful living room and balcony, and our own washer and dryer. The only downside is that the bus runs every 30 minutes, so travel is a little inconvenient if you don't bike.

* Food:

AMAZING food!!! I loved the pastries the most but Copenhagen is very international, so all the restaurants were great as well. Favorites: Gaza Grill, Biang Biang Heroes, Reffen Food Market

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Had lots of opportunities to interact with people in my program, but did not interact much with Danish people. However, I highly recommend the Visiting Host program because I got to learn a lot about Danish culture from my host parents!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Did not have any experience with healthcare, but I heard from others that the designated DIS doctor wasn't very good.

* Safety:

Never felt unsafe in Copenhagen. It just gets a little chaotic in the city center after 2AM

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Copenhagen is very expensive, but the food and transportation coverage by DIS helped.
