DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned how to be more independent, and found a real love for travel. It was also very worthwhile to live in a different city and explore being a local there.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I greatly enjoyed the environmental science courses, particularly how hands on they were with field studies and similar experiences. Other classes were good as well, but stood out less.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I did not interact with on site admin much, but all communications seemed very friendly and there were good resources.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The living arrangement was excellent, with the only slight downside being the distance from DIS (30 minute commute).

* Food:

Did my own shopping and cooking, so the freedom was nice. However, I could have had more freedom and saved money by not being charged by DIS for food and just spending my own money instead of them giving a grocery card with a budget that only works at certain stores.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I didn’t interact too much with the locals, but as someone living in the city I felt like I learned the area very well.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I didn’t have any issues, so I’m unsure how they were addressed.

* Safety:

For the most part I felt quite safe— my only bad experiences were two minor instances on the metro (though 95% of the time the metro felt very safe). I know a couple people had bad experiences at clubs/bars.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Copenhagen is a pretty expensive city, so if I ate out or went to a castle/museum that can get a bit pricey. I took the opportunity to travel a lot, which was somewhat expensive, but if I didn’t the experience would be much cheaper.

The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
