Abroad in Copenhagen :) February 16, 2026
By A student (Biology and Biomedical Sciences, Brandeis University) - abroad from 08/16/2025 to 12/12/2025 with
DIS Copenhagen: Semester
I miss my friends and being abroad so much! Got to meet so many amazing people and experience new things. You'll expect many things while abroad, but not everything.
Personal Information
| How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 1 month - 6 months |
Review Your Program
|
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Professors were very engaged, well-versed in their studies, and passionate. The courses are not as difficult as back home, but that's good because I got to have a balance between having an immersive life abroad, while still being a student. |
|
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
Good! The program does a LOT to help students obtain visas, provide resources for mental health or physical health support, SIM cards, etc. I would be advised going anywhere abroad to be prepared that the support systems you have back home will not be the same abroad, but they do well to provide resources the best they can and are communicative. |
|
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
Very! I loved my roommates and lived with both American and Danish students in a kollegium. The place was furnished and very nice. Good central heating/cooling system, and well maintained. |
| * Food: |
I cooked for myself while abroad. Copenhagen is expensive, but you can find good food of most cultures here. They also provide a food stipend that can be used at select grocery stores. |
|
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Very! But this is largely because of the living arrangements being with Danish students, and a Danish friend who I knew. |
|
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
No issues while abroad and Denmark will require you to obtain their national insurance. DIS will help you through this process and it's much cheaper overall than the States. |
| * Safety: |
I felt completely safe in comparison to being in the States, honestly. I would walk back home and take the metro well late into the night with no concerns. |
| If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
|
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Language
| * Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
|
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
I was required through my school to take the language course, but they also tried to provide events/VERY basic language integration in communicative emails, newsletters, etc. |
| How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | None |
| How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Beginner |
| Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? | Duolingo |

Reasons For Studying Abroad
| To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you. |
The Nearly Native or Trail BlazerCraving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.' |
