DIS Copenhagen: Semester

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I'm so grateful to have lived in a different country that is so thoughtful. I loved all of my friends that I made in my living and learning community, and had incredible experiences at my LLC events and core class events/ travel experiences

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

My courses were about as rigorous as I chose to make them, where doing the bare minimum would be enough and not too difficult, but going a little beyond that for personal interest is completely possible too. Certain courses lacked in the encouragement of critical examination of source material, but it really depended in the professor.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Truly fantastic, every aspect of the process was very well considered!

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My room was so gorgeous, with floor to ceiling windows, a private bathroom and private kitchenette (with an induction stovetop, microwave, kettle, utensils, pans, etc.), and I was satisfied with the abundance of supplies available the supply room (soaps, cleaning materials, extra bed sheets, etc).

* Food:

There wasn't any food provided (except at certain events) but there was a $600 stipend available to be used at certain grocery stores and 20% discounts at certain places nearby the Student Hub.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I really loved my professors and how excited they were to share local Danish culture, from bringing treats into class to making traditional Christmas rice porridge together (in a graphic design class!). I met many danish people through my housing, and if I wanted to, I had many opportunities to be even more integrated in local culture than I was.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I was able to get a refill of my SSRIs by calling early one morning, scheduling a telephone appointment with a clinician for later the same day, and I was able to pick up my medicine (from any pharmacy I wanted) that same day. I also paid about half as much for twice as much medicine as I usually get/pay for in the states, so it was a great experience for me! To be fair, this was only after my residence permit had been processed, which took a little over a month into my stay.

* Safety:

I always felt very safe

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

DIS made everything very easy!

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $20
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Make a spreadsheet!

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

  • high student support
* What could be improved?
  • Commuting times
  • Critical thinking encouraged in classes
  • More food options and support available
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I didn't know much about the LLCs, and so I got incredibly lucky that i ended up in one. My LLC was by far the best part.
