DIS Stockholm Past Review

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Rigor/intensity: Classes were not as difficult than those at my home university, but they were still very interesting and gave me the opportunity to study things I wasn't able to study before. Resources: Mark was such a helpful and nice librarian!! He allowed students to request books and then ordered them for the library. Matias was also great! When my laptop broke he lent me the DIS laptop before I found a replacement. As great as the staff was, I do think DIS should try to find a computer lab that students could use. Professors: Wonderful and super nice, but I feel that some of them need to put more thought into their field studies and need to have clearer and more accurate syllabi.

On-site administration of your program

They were great I just wish we had access to more extra-curricular activities and to musical activities (especially considering that the program was located inside a music school). Also since homestay students do not get to interact with those in the LLCs or DIS dorms as much, I think that DIS should ensure student groups in the first program scavenger hunt are a mixture of kids from different housing options.

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I was placed with the most incredible host family. They truly made me feel like I was a part of their family and are the reason why I had such a wonderful semester.

Not only did my host family have me try things like moose or reindeer, but they also had a grocery service that would deliver ingredients for new recipes every week. It allowed me to try a variety of new dishes and eat so much healthier than I usually do.

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I think my host family did a great job with introducing me to Swedish culture. I am only giving this a four because I think there is still more to learn, and I hope to have an opportunity to come back and learn more about Sweden. I also feel it is important to mention DIS' Diversity Club which was excellent in making me feel welcome to a place I knew nothing about and was helpful in making me understand different aspects of Swedish lifestyle I originally was confused about.

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I never had any health issues abroad so my answer may not be the most accurate, but I thought the DIS staff was quite quick to help my friends with their healthcare issues.

Sweden is super safe.

I loved my study abroad experience and already miss it terribly.

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

If it weren't for my host family letting me bring leftovers, I easily would've spent $50 a week on just lunch. Dinners are even more pricey and so are toiletries so Stockholm is quite expensive. But DIS makes it easier on us by giving us a card for the subway, and Stockholm has a lot of cool free museums and or activities. All in all: It is expensive but Stockholm is 100% worth it.
