So Glad I Chose DIS Stockholm January 24, 2025
By A student (Neuroscience, Brandeis University) - abroad from 08/17/2024 to 12/14/2024 with
DIS Stockholm Semester
I learned to appreciate the moments of cultural immersion, trying something new, and enjoying the little things in day-to-day life. It was a great opportunity getting to live in a different country and it was a refreshing take on how student life can be so much more balanced.
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 2 weeks - 1 month |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
My study abroad experience was a very great time and the classes I took were engaging and professors were knowledgeable, friendly, and accessible. Best part of the DIS program is definitely the field study component- students are treated super well and it's built-in travel across Europe in the semester! Would say academics at DIS Stockholm felt easier than my home institution and I spent less time working on homework/completing projects than back home. Bigger emphasis on learning outside the classroom, guest lectures, collaboration, exploration, and I didn't have any exams. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
DIS staff were overall very friendly. Personally didn't have too many administrative issues where I needed help but staff were generally responsive. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
Apartment style with one roommate, large living room + bedroom + bathroom, and functional kitchen. Met a lot of my friends through my housing site and me and my roommate got along very well. The studentboende did have less local student interaction than anticipated though. I was in a quieter corridor of the building but other parts were louder/had more partying from other DIS students. |
* Food: |
Cooked 80% of my meals in Stockholm and the 6000kr ICA stipend can get you a long way (covered the majority of my grocery spending for the semester). I enjoyed cooking in my apartment but would be a more difficult experience if I was in a room with a smaller fridge. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Had the most local interaction through meeting local students at volleyball, my visiting host family (would highly recommend if you're not in a Homestay), and the BIPOC affinity group. You kind of have to seek out local interaction in the DIS program but it's definitely available. It was nice learning more about Swedish culture in class as well. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
Personally didn't seek health assistance but friends were able to get medical help/therapy pretty easily over the semester. |
* Safety: |
Felt safe in the city and walking alone at night. Some neighborhoods have greater incidents of gang violence and shootings are increasing in Stockholm but nothing compared to the level in the US. Gang violence is really only a problem if you are involved in the gangs themselves so as a foreign student I felt very safe. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
Had a great time traveling with my classes, met so many incredible friends, great exposure to Swedish life, and a very good balance of academics and free time while abroad. |
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
Was able to spend less than my planned semester budget, but I cooked a lot and did one personal trip outside of Sweden during Thanksgiving (other students traveled more often). Stockholm is an expensive city but you may be more used to the prices based on where you're from in the US. |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Cooking at home if you have a kitchen area. Having a budget spreadsheet where you can log your daily expenses throughout the semester was helpful for me. |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | Yes |
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?
0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language |
|
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | None |
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? | Beginner |
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? | There are language cafes at local universities in the city where you can practice Swedish. |

About how many local friends did you make that you will likely keep in touch with? |
A Look Back
* What did you like most about the program? |
|
* What could be improved? |
|
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | If you're debating between DIS Stockholm and Copenhagen, choose Stockholm! I only applied to Stockholm but many of my friends applied to both and after visiting both cities almost all of them preferred the environment and lifestyle in Stockholm much more. |

Comments: | Loving Brain was the academic highlight of my semester. Our field studies to Malmö, Copenhagen, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Croatia were amazing and a great opportunity to bond with the class and professors- a very unique experience compared to other classes. The papers we read were very interesting and I enjoyed the class format of some lecture, some discussion, and informal presentations on the papers we read. I also thought the final observational research project was a rewarding experience. For the first time this class was offered, I would highly recommend (I am really glad I decided to switch from the Neuro of Addiction class to this one). Our professor really made the class a great time but he was a visiting faculty for the one semester. |

Comments: | Professor was very enthusiastic and passionate about the material and I gained some insight into user-friendly design, storytelling, and tools for data visualization. I appreciated the way grading was structured where you don't have to complete all the assignments to get an A. Group project experience was solid and glad I got to learn some Tableau over the semester. Sometimes lectures weren't the most engaging but sometimes they were fun. |

Swedish Language and Culture I |

Instruction Language: | Swedish and English |
Comments: | The class wasn't that challenging and cool to learn some more about Swedish culture. Not the most engaging class but felt like I did learn some more of the language, especially the basic grammatical rules. Wish there was more practice speaking, reviewing grammar, and interactive activities in class. Also enjoyed the cultural assignment we got to do where we explored a neighborhood in Stockholm and talked to locals. Class was chill and not a lot of work which was nice. |

Comments: | Really great research opportunity and very welcoming and friendly lab environment. PI was a great mentor and provided a lot of guidance and feedback throughout the semester. I enjoyed our weekly schedule which was Tuesday and Friday in the lab from 9-6, compared to other RAs in other projects that didn't have a set schedule. Days would go by in lab pretty fast and it was fun doing oocyte electrophysiology. Gained new lab skills and confidence in my work and completed a poster and paper that I was proud of by the end of the semester. |
