DIS Summer in Scandinavia

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
With changing health care in America, it was a great experience to be able to experience socialized health care in Europe for comparison purposes.

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Housing at a DIS Residential Community was wonderful! It is clean, spacious, has great WiFi connection, and was close to my classes. In addition, the RA was very involved in teaching us about Danish culture and helping us have the best experience possible!

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

To become integrated, riding a bike around the city as a main mode of transportation is the best way!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Copenhagen is an extremely safe city to be in! Caution should be taken, however, in other cities around Europe that are part of study tours!

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Copenhagen is one of the more expensive cities in Europe, but careful budgeting helped to lower the amount of money I spent.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $150
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? The grocery store is a cheaper option for food than most restaurants. If you want to go to a lot of tourist attractions, then consider buying a Copenhagen Card for either 24, 48, or 72 hours.

Comments: Anyone interested in practicing medicine and studying in Europe should strongly consider taking this course! The lectures go into great depth of anatomy and physiology, while coming from a perspective of how to diagnose and treat patients with diseases the affect the various body systems. In addition, the class provides case studies for discussion including an actual patient at the hospital. We also got to learn techniques of how to give an ultra sound, stitch a simple wound, and start an IV. Other equipment we got to work with was what medical students use when learning how to conduct laparscopic surgery and bronchoscopic procedures. The course is taught by a doctor who can give great insight into the field!
