Integrating into a Culturally-Rich Country Past Review

DIS Summer in Scandinavia

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned to appreciate the culture and enjoy the day as it comes rather than trying to figure out the future constantly. Danes like hygge, which can be understood as comfort, and it was very apparent in the city and the way people acted. There were blankets on every chair in an open cafe and there was no sense of rushing to events or other appointments. It was a very rewarding program and gave me some qualities that I will keep with me forever.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

The program was very welcoming! Their teachers and SRAs were amazing and easy to talk to! The Danish culture was very welcoming and easy to adapt to.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Using a credit/debit card can make it easy to lose track of how much money you're spending on food, etc. Living in Denmark is more expensive than in the States so I found it better to use cash and keep the receipts.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The people
  • The food
  • The classes
* What could be improved?
  • Honestly I can't really think of anything to change
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I know now how to use the public transport system. The zones in Copenhagen are confusing and there can be times when we would accidentally go to some place that we needed to get a ticket for because our travel passes didn't cover the zone.
