About

If you’re looking for a semester that pushes you academically and lets you live in one of Europe’s most exciting capitals, Duke in Madrid delivers. Study entirely in Spanish while spending your days navigating Madrid’s café culture, world-class museums, buzzing plazas, and late-night conversations that stretch your language skills in real time.

Founded in 1989 and sponsored by Duke’s Department of Romance Studies and the Global Education Office, the program combines two Duke Signature Courses at the Duke in Madrid Center with two electives at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), one of Spain’s leading public universities, known for its strengths in social sciences, economics, engineering, and international studies. You’ll debate contemporary issues in Spanish by day and see those same themes unfold across the city through film screenings, neighborhood walks, art exhibitions, and regional travel.

Expect academic rigor, yes – but also weekend trips across Spain, flamenco performances, gallery visits, fútbol matches, tapas with friends, and the kind of everyday independence that builds confidence fast. As your comprehension sharpens and your ability to express complex ideas grows, so does your understanding of Spain in a global context. The Advanced track is designed for students who are ready to engage fully in Spanish-language academic discussion and take courses alongside Spanish and international students at UC3M.
