What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I made some great friends, met some lovely girls, traveled all over France and Germany, learned some french, made some decent Art, had an exhibition. It was a great experience for me. It changed my perspective. I would hope everyone has that kind of opportunity at some point in there life. I will never forget it.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

In all actuality, I didn't take any academics. This is a a French Art school, and being from the Museum School and not speaking much French, this wasn't really my goal. I'm sure there good if you know what's going on. I went any way.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The "administration" is two ladies in an office, who were not really helpful so I would typically bipass them. If you need someone to hold your hand you are SOL, but that goes for the Museum School too.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I got a gorgeous apartment, by myself for really cheap. Right on the river. I also figured that out on my own. I think the dorms are kinda crappy.

* Food:

Boulangerie's, Kebab's, cheap wine, cheap Camembert. What more could you want? No food at the school really and Alsacien cuisine is a pile of kruat. Not for me.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I met lots of great people that I am still friends with today. I found people to travel with, play music, lots of fun. People start drinking at 3pm everyday. I didn't do much work, but don't think that is what your Art students studying abroad should be doing any way.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I never got sick, but if your going to be sick, France is a good place to do it. Saftey wise Strasbourg is full of wandering baby ducks. It's safer than Disneyland. I did get lost one night, ended up in germany in a sketchy gypsy camp, but that was my fault.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

I went with no skills, french CD's and left with poor skills. I can order food, ask for directions. I think that's as much as you can expect in one semester without trying too hard.

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Exchange

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Independent study

Course Department: Art
Instructor: Manfred Sternjacob, Stefan Kern
Instruction Language: English
Comments: All the "courses" I took were independent studies. These consisted of studio visits with professors who spoke english and were interested in working with me. That is the nature of the program, there are good people there, you have to find them and set up meetings on your own.
Credit Transfer Issues: No issues. I took care of all the nessisary paper work before I left.
