What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Absolutely. I have never learned so much about myself in four months. I feel more confident socailly, I feel I improved dramatically in my craft, and I feel that I truly learned how to live fully.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The arts program at ECU was extremely rich. I benefited from very engaged and well qualified professors, beautiful and well equipped facilities, helpful peers, focus on individual feedback in classes, and a very wide range of student resources.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Both the study abroad administration at ECU and my specific program (WAAPA Dance) administrators were extraordinarily helpful. They were in contact almost immediately after my acceptance into the program so they were already helping with the process before I had departed for Australia. They were easy to contact, quick to respond, and always extraordinarily knowledgeable and helpful.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The student housing is a very good option for international students because it allows you to meet other exchange students as well as local students and it is right on campus. It's a short bus ride away from the city center, and it's easy to find company if you don't feel like riding the bus alone. The staff are very friendly and helpful and though it IS more expensive than most outside rental units or houses, it is a very convenient, safe way to go for a semester abroad. There is no risk of getting scammed, or being mislead. Also, the kitchen is fully stocked by the housing office which is a nice perk for someone only staying a short while.

* Food:

I didn't find the restaurants all that exciting but there are a few jems- for example, Analakshmi on the swan river is an inexpensive Hare Krishna restaurant on the Swan River. I did not dine out much mostly because of money.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Although I wouldn't say it was much of a "Culture Shock" going to Australia, it was by far one of the most rewarding semesters I have ever experienced. Australians are extremely hospitable and social, the natural environment was breathtaking, and I met students from all over the world. It was an interesting way to get a taste of the Southern Hemisphere because there are a very different and distinct range of international students and immigrants (i.e. Malaysia, Indonesia, Mauritius Islands, South Africa etc.)

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

I already spoke English which is Australia's official language. But, meeting other international students who were (at the very least) bilingual did increase my drive to learn a second language.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? GO for it! But, if you go during Australian winter, be sure to bring warm clothes- a warm jacket or coat would have been nice as it gets quite cold at night and when it's rainy.
