Emerson College: Kasteel Well: The Netherlands

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
The experience was worthwhile because of all the traveling I was able to do on the weekends and because of the connection I ended up feeling to the people I traveled with and lived with. It is a completely unique program, unlike any other study abroad experience other schools offer. But it really is the traveling that makes the whole thing worthwhile.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month
The term and year this program took place: Spring 2010

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload (when it comes to homework like reading, studying, papers), is a little heavier than many of the other study abroad programs I've heard about. And it can be a challenge that most of the teachers are European, but a very worthwhile experience.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

There was some disorganisation withint the administration, but otherwise there were no problems.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The Kasteel Well Program is located in a 15th century castle in a town called Well. Only Emerson students are admitted and live there for the duration of the program. It is a great experience, but certainly not for everyone. Living in such isolation with so many fellow students can be difficult.

* Food:

The quality of the food was not terrible, but shopping for groceries was always necessary since meals were spaced so far apart.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The freedom to travel on the weekends is the most incredible part of the program.

* Safety:

You are pretty much in charge of your own safety when traveling, although the administration is very good about keeping track of where students are traveling and where htey are staying.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? It is an incredible program and worth the money to go have the experience. But be prepared for the social stress of living out in the country with 80 other students and zero privacy.
