Emerson College: Kasteel Well: The Netherlands

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
While cultural awareness seems to be the obvious answer, you would be surprised how much you learn about yourself when interacting others.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month
The term and year this program took place: Spring 2010

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

interesting, gen eds so i wont take much with me for my major, courses should be graded on pass/fail, as most study abroad experiences do.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

we should be allowed to drink on campus, if we are legal in the country, we should be treated as such everywhere. Instead Emerson has turned the castle into an embassy. They had a great knowledge of America and organizing the program.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

Also, they should have more variety for food hours. For the amount we paid, i dont feel that we got our money's worth. If they are going to be such sticklers about letting us take food out of the dining hall, then they should provide some sort of tea/coffee snack type hour around 2pm.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

again, wished they taught us more Dutch.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

i felt like the castle was a very safe environment

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

most spoke english, they hardly attempted to teach dutch which was frustrating. They should offer a "basic language 101" type of course and learn a bunch of langauges so when we go places we have options of saying certain things and avoid being ridiculed for not being taught language as seriously as they do in europe.
