Emerson College: Kasteel Well: The Netherlands

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned that there is so much more of the world that I have yet to see. It was worthwhile. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Most of my classes were incredible. The chance to learn so much outside of the classroom as well as inside the classroom was amazing and very rare.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The administration at the castle are some of my favorite people I have ever met in my life.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I was living in a castle so... I was incredibly satisfied.

* Food:

The food got a little repetitive but most of it was good and I got to try amazing dishes on the weekends when I was traveling.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I have an understanding of Dutch culture that I never thought I would have. We have to take two tests before the program begins about the Netherlands based off of readings we were given. Very early on, we learned about Dutch culture and history so it was easier to integrate into that society.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I never had a health problem but when I had friends who were hurt or sick, they were taken care of.

* Safety:

I don't think it gets safer than Well, Limburg.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

During the week when I was home in Well I didn't spend very much at all but when I traveled to different countries I would spend quite a bit on airfare and living.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? It was different every week but I spent $4,000 for three months.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Buy a few airplane tickets in advance because they start out incredibly cheap.
