Emerson College: Kasteel Well: The Netherlands

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained world experience. I gained knowledge on how to travel and how to get around in a foreign country. I gained friends and understanding of other cultures. The amount that I gained is ridiculous. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.

Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: Spring 2009

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The teachers were European and had different perspective and teaching style than I was used to. I loved how direct they were and how much they knew about their subjects. I loved my teachers and got a lot out of all my classes.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

They had very well planned excursions, but they had little meetings to explain what we would be doing that weren't helpful. They didn't do many programs while we were at the castle, but they were fun and nice.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I LIVED IN A CASTLE! It was gorgeous and wonderful and the grounds were perfect. The little town we lived in was so much fun and we got to know a lot of the people who lived there. It was perfect.

* Food:

I don't like dutch food all that much. It is very heavy and a lot of it is yellow and it wasn't the best on my stomach. I loved fries and frite sauce, which is basically mayonnaise. And very fattening.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I loved the people I was with. I was also an RA, so I got to plan fun activities and had a wonderful time.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

There was a doctors office down the road, and this tiny town was the safest thing in the world. Although, my bike was stolen, but never did I feel unsafe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

We didn't have a class teaching dutch, and I think we should have.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? DO IT. It was the most amazing thing I've ever done. They are so wonderful there and you see all of Europe. It was the most fun I have ever had.
