Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: Fall 2009

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The teachers are amazing. Every one of my professors was incredibly knowledgeable and interesting. I have retained everything I learned about art. Crazy!

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Dulcia gets things done. All the time.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

WE LIVED IN A CASTLE.

* Food:

Honestly, it could have been a lot worse. Nelly, Stephan, and Yanto did their best,. The vegetarian options were often boring, but always pretty filling. Everything was boiled...that got kind of old. I can't complain, though. I didn't starve.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We travelled every weekend. How can you get much better than that? I saw so much! I also had a lot of fun in Berlin. It was a bit excruciating to be on guided tours all day, however. Maybe we can shorten those?

* Safety:

I mean, what can you do when you have 85 kids living in a small space and one of them gets sick? We all shared colds throughout the semester, just like at the home campus. They did have a quarantine room in case anyone got swine flu. We didn't need to use it though, thankfully. Well itself is a very safe town. I mean, come on, it's a village. But some people got pretty drunk at the bar and still made it home alright. We were always able to call OSA if we were travellign and something went wrong--I personally never needed to, but some people lost their passport/got mugged and they got back alive. I didn't use the healthcare system, but the people who did were enchanted by it. I don't think a sick person in the Netherlands will ever have to worry.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

I did learn a bit of Dutch, but I didn't go there in order to practice it. Call it a bonus.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Don't listen to David Griffin's packing list--watch "If Only I Knew!" (the video we made) instead!
