Emerson College: Kasteel Well: The Netherlands

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained a richer understanding of the world we live in. I met amazing people and learned things I could never learn in a classroom. I would love to do it all over again.

Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: Spring 2008

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Some of the best professors I have ever had. A wonderfully educational experience.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The administrators were very adamant about the students learning in and experiencing a new culture. They encouraged travel and visiting museums and locations we read about in the classroom. It worked very well, although in some cases, the museum visits were not very relevant.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

No complaints. Although, the bathroom was always rather smelly.

* Food:

The food was hit or miss but it was wonderful to eat food that we are not accustomed to in the United States.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I sometimes learned more by traveling than I did in the classroom. I met some of the most interesting people I have ever met on my visits to other countries. The knowledge I gained from experiencing new countries has made me a more knowledgeable and educated citizen of the world.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I felt very safe at the castle; although we were not chaperoned on our weekend trips. We are adults and it is important for us to explore the world on our own and be responsible about it. However, some of my fellow classmates were attacked in Croatia on the walk back to the hotel.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

I learned some dutch, but my english and writing improved overall due to an excellent creative writing course and intensive reading assignments.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? It is an experience unlike any other. One may never get a chance to study in a castle in Europe. I would encourage anyone to do it.
