Emerson College: Los Angeles - Emerson College in Los Angeles

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained so much experience, contacts, friends and academic experience. I had a great time.

Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: Spring 2009

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I hit the jackpot with my internship for sure. I learned a lot about the industry through them, more expertise in my field, and great experience. The classes I took were interesting and the teachers were great.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Can't think of any complaints.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

It served its purpose, it seemed safe, was very close to class and fun, but I had some complaints, but they at least are pretty small. I should say that all of these problems are not Emerson's fault, but Oakwood Apartments' fault. I had some noisy neighbors, the walls are sort of thin too I think. The doors slam really loud. The parking is annoying and my biggest complaint. The parking near my apartment is almost always full when I get back from class (after 10pm) and there are cars there that have been in the same spot for the entire time I've been here, as in they have car covers on them and the owners are obviously not here. It seems to me that they should have to park up on the hill so those who are living here now don't have to hike up the hill the next morning. Also, there are spaces marked future residents or enterprise rentacar only and people park there. Every time I park there, I make sure I get up early to move the car just in case they tow it, but no one else who parked there does. They need to either enforce it, or not. My other complaint was that they wouldn't let me have a DVR in my room (I offered to pay the difference). They said that due to a problem with people not returning equipment, I couldn't get one, yet some people who worked there said I could and I couldn't get a straight answer from them for a couple of weeks. In the end I couldn't get one. Minor problems, I know, but somewhat annoying to me.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Great trips planned: The Getty Center, Six Flags and Disneyland. Also at least once a month the RA's had get togethers either in their apartments or in the clubhouses.

* Safety:

Once I got a notice from Oakwood that there had been a few car breakins, but it was due to the fact that the victims left valubles visible.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? If you want to work in the industry and possibly live in Los Angeles, definitely partake in this program and I would recommend in your last semester in case you decide to move out here, so you don't lose all of your connections.

Age of Anxiety (Seminar)

Course Department:
Instructor: Scott Cooper
Instruction Language: English
Comments: The course had very interesting discussions, politically charged, and the screenings each class were very well chosen. There was a lot of reading each week from packets he passed out, and the grade is based on attendance/participation and two papers. Scott is real laid back and creates little stress.

Aesthetics of Film Editing

Course Department:
Instructor: Peter Schink
Instruction Language: english
Comments: My concentration is post-production, so this class was very interesting and helpful for me. It is not a technical class, so you should really know Avid before taking it. I didn't have a problem, but some others who didn't know avid struggled a little bit. Peter is somewhat tough on the students' cuts, which took some getting used to, but it really does help prepare you for the real world and how many notes you will have from a director. There are quizzes, scenes due each week, and some very light reading. If I had any complaint about the class, it would be that he focused a bit too much on film, and not enough on other types of editing, but I guess it makes sense because he was a film editor. He is a really cool guy, easy to joke around with. The best part of the class was all of the guests he brings in. We actually had some oscar nominees come into our class to talk. Very informative!
