Emerson College: Los Angeles - Emerson College in Los Angeles

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Of course. It was amazing. I got to live elsewhere, where it's warm and skateboard friendly, I had a kick-ass paid internship, which was basically like having a full time job, loved my coworkers, spend quality time with my girlfriend, got other jobs on set, got a job offer from my internship site, and will probably move back in a few months. I couldn't have asked for anything better.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

In terms of Emerson College's classes and educational programs provided, I felt like they were just the right level of difficulty and challenge. The professors all knew that we were really there to put all our efforts into our internships and I respected that. They made sure we knew the material but never pressured us with lots of projects or unreasonable demands/readings. It was the perfect level of schooling.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The Oakwoods were pretty cool in general. In terms of the administration, the actual Oakwood employees were totally fine. The RAs living with us didn't seem to do too much so I don't really see the point in even having RAs. The Emerson faculty who were in charge of housing did a good job at the beginning but I didn't really hear from them later on in the semester, which was fine by me. I didn't really pay attention to what was going on with Emerson and the Oakwoods.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I thought the Oakwoods were fine, though having to buy all my own pots and pans, silverware and dish ware was sort of a hassle. Also, someone needs to clean those jacuzzis because they are filthy. Everything else was fine.

* Food:

No food was provided besides a lame Sunday brunch so I had to cook for myself or eat elsewhere. What do you want me to say? It was like living normal life. It would have been nice for Emerson to provide more food or a meal plan or something but I don't see how they could.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Don't just stick to the internship sites that Emerson provides. In fact, don't use them at all. Those places take Emerson interns every month because who doesn't love slave labor. They'll never hire you and they don't care about you. Instead, do some research on your own, find where you actually want to work and see if they have an internship program that you can apply to. That's the way that it works in the real world.
