Living and working in DC was wonderful, but The Washington Center was not. Past Review

Emerson College: Washington, D.C. - The Washington Center

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned a lot about myself, my preferences, my goals, etc. It was absolutely worthwhile and I have no regrets coming to D.C. in general, but I would not choose to go through the Washington Center again. Their classes were not worth the money, and their faculty was often not helpful.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Most educational experiences were from my internship itself. The Washington Center's programming itself was not rigorous and was not up to Emerson's standards. We are a thoughtful student body, and I don't think we were ever truly made to think. We were never challenged by the Washington Center's programming.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

No health issues were addressed, so mostly N/A

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

D.C. is an expensive city, especially with metro costs and food shopping. Unless your internship is paid, you really need to know how to budget and exist without a meal plan.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • City
  • Friends
  • Housing
* What could be improved?
  • Communication with advisors, staff, etc at TWC
  • Classes and programming; more challenging and useful!
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I had known how easy it was to be accepted. Not all of the students in the program share Emerson work ethic and professionalism. The mix of students here accurately reflects the real world, so I adapted, but I think many of us felt misled by the application process. We were under the impression that this was a program that would intellectually stimulate us and challenge us, and in many cases, it was not such a program.
