By (The College of New Jersey) - abroad from 08/22/2013 to 12/20/2013 with

European Study Center: Heidelberg - Study Abroad in the EU

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was an experience I will never get again!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Classes were super easy. I learned a lot from outside of class

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Interns/Receptionists were AWESOME. Professors were so-so. Program Coordinator is very helpful, understanding, and will do what she can to help.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

It was a really nice house. I was expecting to be living in an International house though. There were only other Americans living here.

* Food:

Europe has the best variety of foods

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I felt no integration through the school. Any integration with the local culture was done at a bar or coffee shop. I was under the impression that the classes were at a local university with other international students and was very dissapointed to find out they were taught by wannabe professors from the states with as much international experience as I have. *exception to the Human Rights teacher

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

No tragedies

* Safety:

Super safe calm city.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

You can definitely make this as cheap or expensive as your tastes are.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? roughly 50-100
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Cooking for yourself rather than going out is a great way to budget.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

Really great German teacher. She put a lot of effort into making the class out of nothing.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? Beginner
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Intermediate
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? 4 semesters of German
How many hours per day did you use the language?
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? More cultural integration with local or other international students!

Instructor:
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This course was an annoying waste of time, and a joke of a class. I learned absolutely nothing. The monotonous essays consisted of grammatical lessons I learned in Junior High. Professor was unorganized and unclear of expectations, numerously going back on her word and does not work well with college students.
Credit Transfer Issues: This does not transfer as anything remotely useful.
