Fairfield University: Florence - Semester or Year in Italy
The study abroad experience is one of the most worthwhile experiences I have ever had. It forced me to step beyond my comfort zone. It forced me to accept that there are things that are beyond our control, but that is ok, you can still enjoy an experience that you do not plan every minute of, sometimes things happen when you haven't perfectly planned the trip that are better than anything you could have planned. I learned to be flexible and adventurous. I made great friends and learned alot. I would not have changed any of it.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The academic rigor of this program did not compare with the academic rigor of Providence College. The education of this experience, however, was as great an education as that I have received at PC. The education simply did not occur within the classroom. Rather, it occurred in my interaction with other people: restaurant owners, store owners, Europeans on trains and buses and airplanes. Learning to communicate and to grow in an entirely different culture is where the education of this experience lies. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
Joanne and Brooke wer always available. The assistant program director was a student recently graduated from Fairfield University and she lived in our apartment building. She was easily accessible, though it sometimes took her a bit of time to address issues. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
The housing was ideal. I lived on the Piazza del Duomo, in the center of the city. The apartment building was full of American students in my program. These accommodations allowed for a cushioning and a support system throughout the program. Everyone within the building became very close and spent alot of time together exploring the city.

The location was ideal. The actual building, however, had some problems that took longer than expected to fix. Our washer was broken and leaking for some time before any one came to look at it. The girls downstairs had a serious issue with mold that took months to be addressed. The apartment situation was ideal with the tenants and location, and the slowness to react, we came to realize was simply a part of the Italian way. |
* Food: |
The food was whatever we knew how to cook. It forced us to learn to cook, to grocery shop in a foreign country. It forced us to budget better, and it brought the different tenants in the building together because we often cooked together for convenience. we ate alot at the osteria del Agnolo where massimo, the owner, and marti the waiter took care of us every time we went in to eat. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
To ease the stress of mid term time, finals time, holidays away from home and down time during the semester. the program arranged dinners at nice restaurants in the city. these dinners were free but not mandatory and allowed the students to experience fine dining and took the stress off of worrying about cooking and planning meals in an otherwise busy time. As I mentioned the orientation process was very successful and fun and brought us into the experience very smoothly. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
I felt that Florence was very safe, indeed there were times where I realized that I felt too safe. There were a few students who got sick during the semester, the doctor the program recommended spoke English and if necessary paid house calls. The hospital was not far from the apartments, but I do not know of any one who needed to be taken there for any health concerns. The store owners at the pharmacie were also very helpful. they were doctors who could prescribe medicine simply based upon your symptoms, without you needed to pay a visit to the doctor especially. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | The program said that $150 was what we should expect to spend and that $5000=$6000 is thae average expenditure. It is possible to stay within this budget if you need to. However, the dollar against the Euro is very week. If you want to live comfortably, and travel, most of the students I spoke to spent closer to $8000- $9000 over the semester. Between groceries, and cleaning supplies, cooking utensils, phone bills, museum entrance fees and the unexpected expense that always came up during the week, 150 Euro/week was pretty standard. |
Language
Language acquisition improvement? |
I think that I definitely learned some Italian. I went to Italy with a very very basic understanding of the language from 3 years of lax study in high school. I wanted to learn the language and so aought every opportunity to speak italian. I wish that I could have learned more, I am far from any level of proficiency. I did, however, learn to incorporate Italian into my every day language and learned enough to get around Florence without using English all the time. |

A Look Back
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | DO THIS PROGRAM! It was a wonderful experience. If you want a program that fully immerses you in the culture, this may not be for you. If you are an American Student who loves culture and learning and is not afraid to experience something entirely different, but does not have the qualifications to be completely immersed though you may want to be Do this program. YOu experience Italy, you learn alot, Florence is a wonderful city, not too big, not too complicated but still a Major city with an endless number of things to see. I spent 4 months in Florence and still did not go into every museum I wanted to, every restaurant I wanted to, every shop I wanted to. My recommendation if you choose this program and decide to go, know that the semester is not that long and that you should not something off until a later time, because you will constantly see new things you want to try or see and by the time you realize the trip is almost over the list of things that you left until later is too long to be ble to do everything. seize every moment to try something new! |

Beginner Italian |
Course Department: | |
Instructor: | Tatiana |
Instruction Language: | English |
Comments: | The course was informative. I learned the most at the beginning of each class when she would ask if we had any questions that had arisen since our last class. These questions usually entailed conversations we had had with Italians or struggles we had in communicating or finding something within the city. She would then tell us the best way to find or communicate what we wanted. This as the most practical portion of the class. |

Instructor: | Daniella Costa |

Comments: | The course was very interesting. Daniella knew the material well, and was able to provie insight into the language and composition of the opera that only someone who thoroughly understood Italian as a native language could provide. An excellent course. |

Instructor: | Ted |

Comments: | This course was the least legitimate course I took all semester. It was definitely a course geared towards the non scinece major. The exams were tricky at points, but the class and the seriousness of material was lacking in any real substance. |

Contemporary Italian Cooking |
Course Department: | |
Instructor: | Francesco Mansani |
Instruction Language: | English |
Comments: | I learned the most in this class out of any class I took overseas. Though it is only a cooking class, Francesco held us responsible for history, understanding of ingredients, flavor and technique. He required us to not only know the material verbally on exams, but we needed to reproduce without assistance the foods that he had taught us to make. |

Introduction to Cultural Anthropology |
Course Department: | |
Instructor: | Paci |
Instruction Language: | English |
Comments: | Professor Paci knew her material well. We did not, however, have class that frequently due to the small class size. We had quite a few very informative field trips. There were no exams, and only one paper on which to evaluate our progression in the class |
