France Study Abroad Reflections: Comprehensive Reviews of Past Programs

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Amazing experience. I only wish my french was fluent. I guess I should have stayed a year for that.

Personal Information

If you took classes at multiple universities, list those universities here: Paris III Sorbonne Nouvelle
The term and year this program took place: Fall 2008

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

My art history professor at SBC was AMAZING.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Not enough academic advisers. One adviser for 80 students. With only one one-on-one meeting with the adviser it was very difficult to choose classes at Paris III.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

2 bedroom apartment in Paris a block form the Eiffel tower. Host mom and 2 host sisters. Host sisters shared a room and my mom's bed was in the living area. Small apartment, but did not seem crowded, unless there were a lot of visitors. I had my own large room and shared the one bathroom. Always clean and warm.

Location couldn't be beat and my family was so great. My host mom was an excellent cook.

* Food:

I love french food! I do not have dietary restrictions but vegetarian friends on the program had no trouble in their living situations

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I had so much fun, but was with my american friends all the time. We traveled and went out a night to plays, ballets, clubs, restaurants.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I never felt more unsafe than I would living in any city i.e I wouldn't want to walk home alone at 1 am but during the day and until 10:30 pm feel very comfortable.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 45 Euro...7 lunches and 1 dinner
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Everything cost so much in Paris. Most expensive city. I wish lunch was cheaper. I should have tried to make it some days.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
Language acquisition improvement?

Everyone in Paris speaks english. Menus in restaurants, public signs, and most stores all have english translations or english speaking servers/vendors. Spoke the most french with my host family.
