Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I was at AUCP over 8 years ago, and it was really a formative educational experience that has significantly affected my career path. While the adjustment process is difficult, the program is unique in its sheer determination to improve your language ability. I learned significantly more French in my one semester than any of my friends at other programs. The director has a very strong personality that can be confrontational, but here goal is always to push your boundaries and not allow students to simply disengage. This program is exceptional for language training and is best for students who are willing to honor the language contract and do everything possible to improve their French. If you are looking to spend your time in France speaking English and travelling all over Europe, this is not the right program for you.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I loved my host family and still keep in touch with them on occasion. I was treated as a member of the family (Mother with high-school aged son, and two older daughters who visited frequently). I was always welcome and included in events, and yelled at just like one of her kids when I lost the house keys or spilled wine on the sofa. The host family experience is such an amazing opportunity.

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I played soccer and worked at a local day-care. These were both great experiences, although it was awkward in the beginning (as most things are!) Playing soccer was a great way to meet young French people. Also, I spent a ton of time with my language partner Annabelle, and became friends with many of her friends.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Aix is very safe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

I spoke French almost every minute that I was in France, except for phone calls home. This was the case with most students. The first month is brutally hard, and some students were far more advanced than others (I was middle of the pack), but we tended to speak French even amongst ourselves. Aix is great because most people do not speak English and people in the community tend to be patient with your French (rather than immediately switching to English). Your relationship with your host family is key in building up your French language ability.

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Comments: This is an excellent class if you are willing to engage the prof. You learn a lot about cultural differences and your own assumptions. I remember this course driving me insane on occasion, but it is one of the most valuable parts of the program.
