Discovering Berlin: Socially and Academically Past Review

By (Biosystems Engineering, University of Kentucky) for

FUBiS - International Summer and Winter University

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I love it. It's help me become more patient and accepting towards others. As well, I don't care as much about the little things, I'm happy and content with who I am and what I have to offer to myself and others.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

It was an amazing experience, I just wish I would have been able to travel outside of Berlin more. Our program had lots of things planned for us on the weekends, so it was hard to travel.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Strengths -- Well organized Weaknesses -- Everything was already planned, so it wasn't really what we wanted to do, more so what they wanted us to experience.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

If we were able to be housed with other Germans then I think my language would have improved. The hotel we stayed in was very nice, almost too nice. We got in trouble a lot for congregating in the lobby because it was very "unprofessional." When we simply wanted to play a gamr of cards.

* Food:

It got old after a while. It was good though.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I loved traveling around and shopping. It was a great way to practice my German.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Our tutors were with us almost all the time at the beginning to make sure we knew what was going on. After a while they weren't there as much, so we had to depend on ourselves to figure things out.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

The program was aimed to help people just explore a new culture, none of the members of my group (including myself) had any prior knowledge of German.

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Direct Enrollment
