A great way to fulfill a science requirement Past Review
By Andrew D (Environmental Science., Georgia College & State University) for
Georgia College and State University: San Salvador - Community Ecology
It was very worthwhile, I only wish it had lasted long enough for me to learn everything about the place. I gained a better understanding of community ecology, sedimentary geology, and communal living.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
I thoroughly enjoyed and learned from my study abroad trip to San Salvador, Bahamas. I think the course could gain strength by having more separate coursework for students in different majors, by possibly making the field studies pertain to a students specific interests. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
Our stay was simple and nice, as was the orientation we received upon arrival. They did an excellent job preparing us for our time there. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
A former military barracks. We shared community bathrooms and had a room with five cots provided. We ate three meals a day in a dining hall. Simple but effective.

For the field work we were doing on a daily basis, anything less rugged would have been too nice. |
* Food: |
the food was very good. A mixture of American cuisine and Bahamas food. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
We had plenty of free time to enjoy the scenery and interact with other students from different schools. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
Aside from swimming with barracudas and sharks, I felt safe the entire time. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | One could easily go without spending more than $50 in a week. I probably spent around $70-$90 a week. |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | I had no unanticipated expenses. But I do recommend bring at least $150-$200 for souvenirs and food for a two week stay on the island. |
Language
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | None |
